Nagesh Kukunoor is basking under the glory of wonderful reviews that he has received for his latest film ‘Dor’. It has been appreciated by one and all. One of our earnest readers Shankar Nagarajan sent us a letter stating that Nagesh has not credited the actual source of ‘Dor’ which happens to be a Malayalam movie named ‘Perumazhakkalam’ which also won a National Award for a film on Social Issues. Nagesh Kukunoor on his part is denying the allegation although the storyline is alarmingly similar.

He is saying that the only similarity between the two films is the line ‘How Far Would You Go To Save The One You Love’. Kukunoor admitted in a Mumbai tabloid today that he really wanted that line in his film as it conveys the essence of the film and for that one line he bought the remake rights of the Malayalam film to be on the safer side. He also says that he has given the credit to T A Razak, the writer of ‘Perumazhakalam’ at the end of the film for using his line.

‘Perumazhakalam’ is the story of the repercussions of the murder of Reghu Rama Iyer in Saudia Arabia. Akbar is found guilty of murder under the Saudi law and is condemned to death. The only way judgment could be revoked is if Reghu’s wife forgives the murderer. Now, having seen and reviewed the film, that sounds almost exactly the story of ‘Dor’. I think if Nagesh had bought the rights of the film, he should have given the original source. And still his adaptation in an altogether different context would still have been spectacular.
